Correct practices to increase your vertical jump is very COUNTER INTUITIVE.

Vertical jumping is an explosion caused by the sudden contraction of fast twitch muscle fibers. Because of this, vertical leap training should be "anaerobic." All too often athletes train in a way that that is mostly "aerobic".

How should the training be different?

Basketball players have been told that long distance running would increase their vertical. That is big mistake. Training with the cross country team can make your vertical leap to shrink.

Sprinting, like jumping is a much less aerobic event. How often do you see sprinters running long distances to train for sprinting? NEVER! Then why do so many vertical leap programs have us PACING ourselves during our vertical leap training workouts?

NEVER NEVER NEVER PACE YOURSELF DURING YOUR VERTICAL JUMP TRAINING!

Maybe you have also seen these before. Athletes "running the stairs" or out of breath from doing speed ladder drills. Or maybe get done jumping rope for 20 minutes and your legs are so tired. You are going to say to yourself, "Now that was a good workout, surely that will improve my vertical."

These are not examples of training explosively, so they are NOT going to be able to improve explosive actions. I guarantee you, they will not be satisfied. You have to train explosively and not endurance to increase your jumping ability.

"Explosive" training will not feel right at first. You won't get the same burn as training for endurance. In a few ways explosion traing is easier, it just requires a good deal more focus and short term effort.

Your vertical jump training can improve incredibly soley by decreasing repetition and increasing intensity.
